Do not walk into a boxing gym and just start fighting. In fact, if you’re training for weight loss, you never need to fight or spar with anybody else. And if you do, you need to know all of the proper techniques and be in good shape before you get started. So, begin slowly, and work your way up.

The most basic punch in boxing is the jab, which is a straight punch with your lead hand. If you’re right-handed, stand sideways towards your target, with your back foot to the side just a bit, giving you an open, balanced stance. Hold your hands in a guard, with your elbows close to your body. Then step forward with your lead foot, and as you do, punch with your lead hand.

After the jab, learn to throw your cross, which is your straight punch with your other hand. When throwing your cross, pivot on your backfoot to generate power and torque, and then throw your right hand towards the target.

The hook comes next, and is more difficult to master. This time, pivot with your front foot, and for full power, bend at the knees and explode up as you pivot and turn, uncorking your left hand in a sideways U or hook shape towards the target.

Never push with your punches. You want to make full impact at the right place, which requires proper distance and timing. Any personal training expert will tell you never to throw a punch unless you are within direct reach.

If you ever do begin sparring, instead of using boxing just for personal training and weight loss, remember the most important boxing rule of them all, protect yourself at all times.

Boxing can be really fun to learn, and it can also be wonderful for weight loss and personal training. Use the above tips and guidelines to get started, and you’ll be able to throw the basic punches, and begin making progress. Remember, if you’re training for weight loss, you don’t have to worry about fighting, sparring or being hit. Just perform the exercises and enjoy a great workout.
